How to Plan Motion Sensors at the Top and Bottom of Stairs

Plan for two approaches, not two fixed points

Automatic stair lighting works best when it responds to the ways people actually arrive at a staircase. “Top and bottom” sounds simple, yet every landing has its own doors, turns, room entrances, obstacles, and pass-by traffic. Start by mapping those routes, then use only positions and settings allowed by the exact product manual.

There is no universal sensor height, angle, or detection distance. Fixed electrical work and locally restricted work should be planned or approved by a qualified local electrician.

Map both arrival zones before choosing a position

The lower landing might meet a hallway, front door, living room, or basement. The upper landing might open toward bedrooms, a turning corridor, or another flight. List every normal route: walking toward the stairs, crossing past them, pausing at a door, and approaching from behind a wall. Add doors and their swing, rails, half-walls, furniture, windows, vents, radiators, curtains, and the usual pet route.

The goal is not maximum coverage. It is useful coverage of both stair approaches without treating every movement in a busy hallway as a request for stair light. Do not draw a detection cone unless the chosen manufacturer publishes one for the exact sensor and mounting condition.

Check sightlines before drilling

Use the exact sensor type. “Motion sensor” is a helpful general term, but PIR and other technologies can respond differently. A height or range published for another product is not evidence for yours.

Protect the intended view. A handrail, wall return, open door, furniture item, or landing turn can block an approach. At the same time, a view that reaches too deeply into a corridor can create unwanted activation. Check both problems in the real home.

Check the environment. Follow only the warnings and limits in the selected manual. Include nearby windows, sunlit glazing, heat sources, moving air, curtains, and ordinary cleaning activity in your observation. Keep any chosen device out of the walking path and accessible for permitted service.

Confirm compatibility and reach. The controller must support the intended sensor arrangement. Use only documented leads, ports, and accessories for the exact model; similar-looking connectors do not establish compatibility.

Use a temporary walk test

Shortlist two or three product-permitted candidate zones at each end. Use removable markers before permanent work. If the manufacturer permits a temporary powered test, secure everything safely and keep loose parts away from the stairs. Do not improvise a power source, exposed connection, attachment method, or cable extension.

Test one variable at a time. Approach from each normal direction at both landings. Record whether the response begins early enough for the intended experience, whether movement is missed, and whether people passing nearby create an unwanted trigger. Repeat with doors in normal open and closed positions, in daylight and evening, and with everyday room lighting in use.

If the selected system includes a daylight function, treat that as a separate manual-defined control. A daytime result does not, by itself, prove a motion-position problem. If nuisance behaviour appears, change only a documented variable—such as a permitted position, orientation, mask, sensitivity, or setting—then repeat the test.
