Do LED Stair Lights Need a Power Supply? Kit vs Bare Strip

Yes—the low-voltage LED stair lights discussed here need a suitable DC power supply. The buying question is whether that supply is already included. A complete stair-light kit and a reel of COB LED strip are not the same purchase, even if their photographs show a similar continuous line of light.

The current MALIIGAZA STEP-09 complete kit includes a 24V transformer power supply. The separate white COB strip listing does not include a power supply; its selected 12V or 24V version needs matching DC power. Check the exact product and package list before adding another item to your order.

Start with what you are buying—not what the photograph shows

There are three different shopping situations, and each needs a different next step.

A complete stair-light kit

You are buying a coordinated system for a selected number of illuminated steps. Read the kit's contents, control features and configuration, rather than treating it as a collection of interchangeable generic parts.

For the STEP-09 complete stair-light kit, the current package list includes the controller, matched step strips and main-line cable, plus a 24V transformer power supply. You do not need to buy a second power supply simply because the lights operate at low voltage. You do still need to plan where the equipment goes and follow the supplied installation instructions.

A listing for a controller alone, an extra cable or replacement strip is not that complete kit. Check the actual item title and selected option when comparing prices or preparing a cart.

A bare COB strip reel

You are buying the light-producing component, not an automatic stair-light system. The current MALIIGAZA white COB LED strip listing covers the selected reel; its power supply is sold separately. A PWM dimmer, connectors and mounting profile are not included unless a current option explicitly says otherwise.

Reference-derived component illustration, not an exact-variant specification photograph. The strip is unlit; no supply or control equipment is implied.

This route can suit a custom accent project, but you must specify the rest of the system. A separate reel does not acquire motion sensing or step-by-step sequencing just because you cut it into pieces and place those pieces on stairs. Those behaviors depend on compatible control equipment and the approved installation design.

A replacement component for an existing installation

You are not starting from an empty shopping list. Identify the existing kit, selected strip version and supplied equipment first. A replacement supply or strip must match the actual system; choosing a similar-looking item can create a new compatibility problem.

If something has stopped working, do not turn this purchase guide into a trial-and-error replacement procedure. Begin with our stair-light symptom-record guide and confirm the correct replacement with support.

The power supply and controller have different jobs

In the systems covered here, the power supply provides the appropriate low-voltage DC power. The controller manages supported lighting behavior, such as dimming or a stair-light sequence. A remote or App sends commands; it does not replace the supply.

Functional roles only—not a wiring diagram. Follow the exact product instructions for connections.

Some products combine functions in one enclosure, but you should not assume that a box called a controller contains a mains-to-DC power supply. Read its documented input requirements. Nor does choosing a larger supply create App control, motion sensing or more supported steps.

The term “LED driver” also needs context. Driver families can provide different output types; the label alone is not a compatibility guarantee. MEAN WELL's technical explanation distinguishes constant-voltage supplies used with suitable LED strips from other LED power arrangements. For the MALIIGAZA products linked here, use their specified DC requirements rather than a generic driver recommendation.

Read input and output as separate requirements

The supply's input describes what powers the supply. Its output describes what it provides to the lighting system. Do not confuse a mains input rating with permission to connect the LED strip to household mains.

For a bare strip marked DC12V, the output voltage must match that selected version. A DC24V variant needs the corresponding 24V DC system. A 24V supply is not an upgrade for a strip specified for 12V, and a broad controller voltage range does not change the strip's requirement.

Never connect the linked low-voltage COB strips or STEP-09 controller directly to household AC mains. Disconnect power before handling connections. For fixed electrical work, follow local requirements and use a qualified local electrician where required. This article explains buying decisions, not mains wiring.

Voltage is only the first check. For a separate supply, also confirm the actual load, output capacity, controller limits, connector requirements and installation environment. The load depends on the exact strip width, density and length selected—not just the word “COB” or the length of the reel. Obtain the selected variant's electrical data before sizing equipment.

There is no universal wattage recommendation in this guide. A generic spare adapter, an unused supply from another project or a connector that physically fits is not enough evidence of compatibility.

A simple shelf accent is not a sequential stair system

Illustrative bare-strip application. A smooth light line is a visual property, not evidence of sensing or sequential control.

A homeowner lighting one shelf might choose a bare white COB strip and separately specify the matching supply and any desired dimming control. A homeowner wanting motion-activated, step-by-step stair lighting has a different brief: the control system, step connections and selected kit configuration matter as well.

The continuous, dot-free appearance comes from the COB light source. It does not depend on buying an aluminum profile, and MALIIGAZA stair-light kits do not include profiles. An optional finishing component is not a substitute for either a power supply or compatible control equipment.

For that broader control distinction, read PWM versus SPI LED controllers. Do not buy a controller merely because it has enough buttons or a familiar App icon.

Check the cart before you check out

Use the package list and exact selected variant. This map does not approve third-party substitutions.

Make these five checks in order:

  1. Identify the purchase type. Complete kit, bare strip, controller only or replacement part?
  2. Read the actual included-items list. Do not add a supply already included—or assume a strip reel includes one.
  3. Record the selected DC requirement. Keep the exact product/variant together with the supply and control plan.
  4. Confirm missing components and compatibility. Separate purchases need documented electrical data and a complete project plan, not visual matching.
  5. Plan equipment access. Keep the controller, supply and relevant connections accessible according to the installation instructions. For general project preparation, see our stair-light tools and materials checklist.

Does a low-voltage kit mean there is no mains-powered equipment?

No. The lighting side may operate at low-voltage DC while the power supply receives household power. Treat the two sides separately; low-voltage lighting is not permission to work on mains equipment.

Can I reuse an adapter just because its plug fits?

No. Physical fit does not establish the correct output voltage, capacity, polarity, control compatibility or suitability. Confirm those details for the selected system before reuse.

If I buy more cable or more strip, do I need a bigger supply?

An extension cable and an additional lighting load are different changes. Neither automatically approves a modified kit. Confirm the actual design, load and controller limits with the product instructions or support before extending the system; do not solve an unknown limitation by buying a larger supply.

The useful first question is not “Which power supply looks right?” It is “What exactly is included in the product I selected, and what does the remaining system require?” Answer that, and you can avoid both duplicate purchases and incomplete installations.
