Stair Lights Not Turning On? Make a Symptom Record Before You Troubleshoot

“The stair lights are not turning on” is a useful starting point, but it is not yet a useful diagnosis. A support team needs to know whether every step stays dark, whether the response changes depending on which end of the stair is approached, whether only a defined range is affected, and whether the same result appears in bright daylight and at night.
That distinction matters because a clean observation is more valuable than a guessed cause. Before trying to fix anything, make a short symptom record.

Start with expected behavior, not a suspected cause
Write one sentence describing what you normally expect to see. For example: “At night, when someone reaches either end of the stairs, the whole installed route normally lights in sequence.”
Then write what happened instead, without naming a cause: “No steps lit from the lower approach,” or “steps 1–4 responded but steps 5–12 did not.” This separates an observation from a theory and prevents important details from getting lost.

If the system includes ambient-light behavior, a bright stairwell and a dark stairwell are two different observation conditions. Do not compress them into “works sometimes.” Record the same arrival route at two plainly different times—for example, daytime with strong window light and evening after the area is dark.

Useful wording is concrete: “At 2:15 pm with direct window light, no step response was visible from either approach.” Compare it with: “At 9:30 pm, the lower approach lit steps 1–12 but the upper approach did not.”
Make an affected-range card
If some lights respond and others do not, record the first and last affected step as a numbered range. Count from one end only, and state which end you chose. A still photo or short, wide video is clearer than several cropped close-ups.

For example, write: “Counted from the bottom: steps 1–4 responded; steps 5–12 remained off. Repeated twice after a one-minute pause.” Avoid wording such as “the middle section is bad,” because it leaves the actual boundary unclear.
